The community (aka Wiki) has defined “Life coaching” as being:
“a future-focused practice with the aim of helping clients determine and achieve personal goals”. People who practise life coaching use a varieyof methods to “help clients set and reach goals”. Life Coaches are not psychotherapists nor consultants; personal and business intervention are “outside the scope of their tasking”. Life coaching is following the principles of executive coaching, which was born out of a need for management and leadership training. “Life coaching also draws inspiration from disciplines including sociology, psychology, positive adult development, career counseling, mentoring and other types of counseling“.
The recent form of life coaching stems also, according to Wikipedia, from “the teachings of Benjamin Karter, a college football coach” who used motivational speaking, the late ’70s and early ’80s. He added to the common sports coaching, techniques like “mentoring, values assessment, behaviour modification, behavior modeling, goal-setting and others” in order to better the abilities of his clients.
There are many different coach-training schools and programs*, giving many directions (“and sometimes causing confusion”) for the purpose of gaining ”certification” . “Multiple certificates and credential designations are available within the industry.”
Due to the positive nature of this movement ,”government bodies have not found it necessary to provide a regulatory standard for coaching, nor does any state body govern the education or training standard for the coaching industry; the title of “coach” can be used by any service provider.” However, there are regulations and ethical standards set by coaching federations, all around the world, to avoid misuse of power.
Critics are divided between those who believe that Life Coaching is akin to unrestricted forms of psychotherapy and those who support it by claiming that it is “unlike therapy because it does not focus on examining nor diagnosingthepast. Most people agree, though, that Life Coaching does not delve into diagnosing mental illness or dysfunction.”
*Different schools and forms of Life Coaching are: Business coaching, Executive coaching, Expat and Global Exec. coaching, Personal coaching, Health coaching, Sports, Dating, Conflict, ADHD, Victimisation, Career and Spiritual Coaching.
We strongly believe that “helping” as a generic humane and societal function is essential in our wellbeing. We witness everywhere around us people in crisis, people in need to communicate and share, people desperate to regain control of their lives and find meaning to it all…
Because we care for people as a matter of principle, we see Life Coaching as a means to effect change in people’s lives and as a learning tool to teach and be taught. We strongly believe that helping others is the only way to find solutions to problems that have persisted for so long…
We are certain that if You succeed we will All succeed. That’s why we build and support networks of people as a means of helping their lives and learning how to help others along the way.
